The Mazda CX-5 is the most popular SUV from the manufacturer. The CX-5 actually outsells all of Mazda’s other lineup of models. While it isn’t a cult favorite as a Miata, it is slowly turning into one in the family car category.

With the release of Mazda’s new SUB, the CX-50, many are wondering if the CX-5 is going to be discontinued by the Japanese car maker.
While we don’t have concrete evidence, we can only infer from what we now from sales data and Mazda’s way of doing business.
Will the CX-5 going to be discontinued?
Currently, Mazda has claimed that it has no plans to discontinue the popular SUV. Here are some of the reasons why we believe them for the time being.
- The CX-5 has name association and is the most seen Mazda vehicle on the road. While the CX-50 seems to sound familiar, it is still a different car with a much more rugger look.
- The CX-5 sells and sells. Mazda would be a fool flat out discontinue the model without seeing prolong sales data on how consumers are reacting to the CX-50.
- The CX-5 has a fanbase of enthusiasts and followers who will make a lot of noise if the model simply got discontinued without a better alternative.
When will the CX-5 be discontinued
With Mazda’s commitment to introducing plug-in hybrid powertrains to their lineup, we believe there is a chance that the CX-5 may potentially be axed.
However, there is no reason for Mazda to not attempt to create a hybrid or even a full electric version of the CX-5. It’s obvious that the CX-5 has turned into a timeless model name, almost like the Ford Mustang or Toyota RAV4.
Mazda has plans to introduce larger vehicles such as the VX-70 and the CX-90, which are set to arrive in the US markets during 2023. While this move helps diversify Mazda portfolio of cars, it doesn’t not mean an end to the CX-5 lineup.
Ultimately, only time will tell what happens to a CX-5 but for now rest assured that the car will still be manufactured, marketed, and sold in a variety of countries.
